Through the conclusion of the 2001 Faculty-Staff Campaign, the Register
will feature examples of programs to which faculty and staff may choose
to contribute.
Reach Out and Read
With its Reach Out and Read program, the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital
incorporates literacy promotion among the services of its Pediatric
Continuity Clinic. This program recruits volunteers to read to preschool
children waiting for checkups and provides books for the children to
take with them. The program began with a grant from Dr. Rebecca Swan,
assistant professor of pediatrics, and her husband in memory of their
daughter. Additional gifts help purchase the books given to the children.
