Campus Construction Update


Biosciences/MRBIII contrustion

 

Funded by the Medical Center and the College of Arts and Science, 300,000-gross-square-feet will be built and ready for use by May 2002. Phase two of the construction, beginning in June 2002, will be to relocate the Learned Lab occupants to the new facility as the existing Learned Lab is renovated.

Completion date: March 2003
Approved funding: $95 million

Blair School of Music addition

 

Phase one, the construction of additional classrooms, practice rooms and offices at the Blair School of Music has been completed, and classes were held in the new facility. The 40,700-square-feet of new space was completed within budget. Phase two of the project includes the construction of a 61,000-square-foot addition and a 5,000-square-foot renovation, including the building of a 620-seat performance hall, rehearsal facilities, and additional library and administration space.

School of Engineering addition and renovation

 

Construction of the new central portion began Aug. 1, 2000 and remains on schedule to open in October 2001. Renovation of both existing wings will then begin for a July 2002 completion date.

Law School addition and renovation

Phase one, the addition of two wings to the existing Law School Building, was completed last year, with all furnishings installed and classroom spaces functioning. Phase two, the renovation of the central core of the building, is completed, and the final phase renovation of faculty offices will complete the project in January 2002.

Memorial Gymnasium renovation and expansion


Phase two of the Memorial Gymnasium renovation is under way, creating a new practice gym with three cross courts for practice use by the men and women's basketball teams. The Admirals Club and coaches' offices are also being added. Construction will not interfere with the 2001-02 basketball season, as the interior renovation was completed in 1999.

Baseball Stadium at Charles Hawkins Field expansion

 

Phase one, including the relocation and expansion of the baseball field and construction of new dugouts and an outside metal wall, was completed prior to the start of the 2001 season. Phase two, the construction of a brick-and-iron stadium with seats for 2,300 spectators, is expected to be completed by January 2002.

Schulman Center for Jewish Life construction

 

A ceremonial groundbreaking for the Schulman Center for Jewish Life took place April 29. The building will be located at the corner of Vanderbilt Place and 25th Avenue South, where once stood the Zeta Beta Tau house, the historically Jewish fraternity. The center is named for Ben Schulman, a 1939 alumnus who contributed $1 million to the project.

 

Completion date: August 2002
Anticipated budget: $2.2 million



Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt construction

 

Located next to the existing Capers Avenue Garage, the new Children's Hospital will house 206 patient beds. The Surgical Suite will house 16 operating rooms along with two cath labs and three special procedure rooms. In addition to pediatric Emergency Department and Radiology Departments, there will be a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Excavation began in June 2000, with the first concrete poured in January of 2001. Planning is currently in progress for the Phase II Ambulatory Building to house the pediatric clinics.

Approved funding: $150 million



Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center addition

This project consists of a multi-story addition to the south end of the Frances Williams Preston Building. The purpose of this addition is to consolidate the E. Bronson Ingram Cancer Center programs into one primary location with a distinct presence within the Vanderbilt University Medical Center campus. The project consists of a new two-story lobby at grade with a patient drop-off area, five office floors and a conference center.

Completion date: June 2001
Approved funding: $14 million



2525 West End Gateway construction


The newest perimeter designation is designed with similar brick-and-stone detailing as the other campus entrances. This approach along West End Avenue currently lacks recognition of where the campus begins. The 2525 development is directly across 25th Avenue from this gateway.

Completion date: September 2001
Approved funding: $64,000



Power Plant expansion

After numerous engineering studies, a configuration that has been under construction since October 1999 was determined to be the best means for expanding the central utility capacity for steam and electricity. It also includes the construction of two rock-bored tunnels averaging 70 feet deep in the earth that link the Central Plant to the Medical Center, creating a redundant route to serve the medical facilities beside the current connections.

Approved funding: $25.2 million



Werthan Building/MCNII addition

 


This addition to Medical Center North provides 48,000-gross-square-feet of research, office and support space in two floors and a mechanical penthouse. Construction began in February 2001 and completion is projected for January 2002.

Anticipated budget: $14 million



Freedom Forum Institute for Newsroom Diversity

 

Once completed, the three-story, 32,000-square-foot Freedom Forum Institute for Newsroom Diversity will train about 80 journalists of color from non-traditional backgrounds for newsroom jobs each year. The structure is an addition to the Freedom Forum's existing building at the corner of 18th Avenue South and Edgehill Avenue. The project is independently funded by the Freedom Forum.

Completion date: Fall 2001
Estimated Project Cost: $6 million
