Nominees sought for staff honor

Do you have a colleague whose exceptional service to Vanderbilt over the past year is worthy of one of the University's highest honors? Nominations are currently being sought for the prestigious Commodore Award. Four staff members will be recognized at the Service Award Ceremonies scheduled for Oct. 2­3. Anyone within the Vanderbilt community wishing to nominate an eligible staff member must do so prior to Aug. 1. Rape Defense Classes offered

The Vanderbilt Police and Security Department is again offering the Rape Aggression Defense System, a popular self-defense class exclusively for women. The three-day "Basic Class" will meet on the first three Saturdays in July from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The four-day "Basic Class plus Aerosol Defense and Key Chain Defense" is offered July 31, Aug 2, 14 and 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. Fees are $20 for Vanderbilt faculty, staff and students and immediate family members, and $40 for others. New clinic offers Down syndrome care

A new clinic specializing in the treatment and care of children with Down syndrome opened June 15 at the Children's Hospital Outpatient Center. A team of Vanderbilt professionals who specialize in the care and treatment of individuals with Down syndrome will provide broad, multi-specialty care, increasing availability and efficiency for patients and families. Each patient will be offered a customized plan for specialty care in areas ranging from genetics to otolaryngology. The program also helps patients find other services such as physical therapy, nutritional counseling and audiology. The Down Syndrome Clinic will be on select Friday afternoons in the Children's Hospital Outpatient Center, fifth floor, Suite B, Medical Center East. For more information, call 343-3696.

 

 

Surplus trucks to be sold at auction

Three surplus Chevy pickup trucks owned by the University will be sold to the highest bidder at 9 a.m. Monday, July 12. The three vehicles to be sold via a sealed-bid auction are as follows: ID V-10206 is a white 1986 305 V8 with 46,817 miles; ID V-10278 is a gold 1988 4.3-liter V-6 with 67,984 miles; ID V-10277 is a gold 1988 305 V-8 with 70,859 miles. All three vehicles passed MARTA in March. Sealed bids must be submitted in person or via mail to VUMC Storage, 700 Fort Negley Ct. B 706 TVC, Nashville, Tenn., no later than Thursday, July 5. The exterior of a separate envelope must have the word "Bid" along with the identification number for the desired vehicle. The vehicles are available for public viewing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are located across from Linen Services at the Chestnut Building. All sales are final and no warranty is implied. Winners will be contacted after the bids are opened July 12. Bidders need not be present to claim the vehicle. Summer computer workshops available

The Department of Information Technology Services is offering affordable on-campus computer instruction. This summer, ITS is offering the following single-class courses through July: "Accessing the Internet," June 12 and July 24, 8:30 a.m.­noon, $40; "CorporateTime Introduction," June 14 and July 25, 9­11:30 a.m., $20; and "HTML Introduction," June 13 and July 26, 8:30 a.m. to noon, $40. All classes meet in Room 151 of the Hill Student Center. Registration fees must be paid in advance by personal check or by specifying a center number to be billed. Rec Center offers outdoor trips

This summer can be an outdoor adventure thanks to a variety of trips sponsored by the Vanderbilt Outdoor Recreation Center. Participants will explore the depths of Hardins Cave or will brave the rapids while white-water rafting on the Ocoee River. Other trips include camping, hiking, kayaking, climbing and canoeing. Trip locations vary but are limited to Tennessee and Kentucky. The weekend trips span from one to two days and cost between $18 and $74. All prices include transportation, in-camp food, group equipment, camping and other miscellaneous fees. Some personal gear may be rented at the Outdoor Recreation Office. Jazz concert to feature local trio

University faculty and staff from across campus are invited to beat the summer's heat with the cool sounds of local favorite Beegie Adair Trio. The jazz group will perform Thursday, July 12 at 5:30­7:30 p.m. in the Gymnasium of the Student Recreation Center. Attendees are invited to bring family members, blankets and a picnic supper.
