New coach sees delay as positive for her program
by Skip Anderson
Since the conclusion of the 2001-02 season, the Vanderbilt women's
basketball team has been one of surprises, the first of which
came April 7 when longtime coach Jim Foster announced that he
had accepted the head coach position at Ohio State University.
Then came the widely publicized factual mistake on the résumé
of the coach who, only the day before, had been named Foster's
successor at Vanderbilt. The last three surprises were the amount
of time it took to find what Todd Turner, director of athletics,
described as "the right fit" for Vanderbilt (52 days), that the
right fit was a woman (a Vanderbilt first), and that even the
program's critics seem to agree that Turner found the right person
for the job.
According to her references, Melanie Balcomb -- the winningest
women's head coach at Xavier University -- champions the collegiate
experience of her student athletes. She encourages her players
to have a social life, and demands success in the classroom and
on the court alike. In 2000-01, she guided her Musketeers to a
31-3 record, and advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA
Tournament after defeating Pat Summit and her Lady Volunteers.
She also managed a win over the Commodores earlier the same season.

Seven 'Top TENN' grads earn scholarships
by Susanne Loftis
Seven incoming freshmen have accepted "Top TENN" scholarships
worth half of their tuition at Vanderbilt for the coming academic
year. The students, who come from across the state, qualified
for the scholarship program by being ranked No. 1 or 2 in their
graduating classes, applying to and being admitted to Vanderbilt.
The program was started by Vanderbilt in 1991 and since has
awarded half tuition to about 90 Tennessee students who have attended
the University. For the 2002-03 academic year, each scholarship
is valued at $13,700. The scholarship will be renewed for three
more years as long as the student remains in good academic standing,
and its value each year is half of that year's annual tuition.
