AWARDS

 

Elizabeth Howard, instructor in the practice of nursing, has received the 2000 Excellence in Teaching Award granted by the American College of Nurse Midwives Foundation, Inc. Howard was one of 26 individuals selected for this award created by the A.C.N.M. Foundation, Inc. to honor educators who teach, mentor and serve as role models for midwifery students.

 

Molly Fritz Miller, professor of geography, was named a distinguished alumna by the College of Wooster in Ohio during its alumni weekend June 3. Miller graduated with honors in geology from Wooster in 1969.

 

 

 

PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS

 

Camilla Benbow, dean of Peabody College and professor of psychology, presented "Top 1 in 10,000: A 10-Year Follow-up of the Profoundly Gifted" with David Lubinski, associate professor of psychology; Martha Morelock, research associate; and graduate student Rose Mary Webb at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, held April 23-29 in New Orleans. Benbow and Lubinski also presented "Sex Difference in Mathematical Reasoning Ability at Age 13: Their Status 20 Years Later." Lubinski, Benbow and graduate student Daniel Shea presented "Predicting Educational and Vocational Outcomes for Gifted Adolescents over a 20-Year Interval: The Importance of Spatial Visualization."

 

John Bransford, Centennial Professor of Psychology and pr ofessor of education, presented "Sense of Community in the Classroom: Relationship to Students' Academic Goals" with research associate Helen Bateman; Susan Goldman, professor of psychology; and J.R. Newbrough, professor of psychology, at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association.

 

 
Braxton

John Braxton, associate professor of education, presented "Teaching Alone/Teaching Together: Transforming the Structure of Teams for Teaching" with graduate student Marietta Del Favero at the American Educational Research Association annual conference, held in New Orleans. Braxton was also among the presenters of "Researching Peer Culture in Higher Education: Issues and Implications."

 
Collins

Angelo Collins, associate professor of science education, presented with others "Looking at Measurement from the Outside: SubjectArea Specialists Talk to Measurement Specialists" at the American Educational Research Association annual meeting, held June 23-29. Collins also presented "NCATE Development of the INTASC Science Standards."

 

Mark Ellingham, professor of mathematics, presented "Isomorphic Factorizations" at the PIMS Workshop on Graph Decompositions, held June 6-July 1 at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.

 

Janet Eyler, associate professor of the practice of education, presented "The Research Network Research Agenda and the Current State of Service-Learning Research" during the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, held April 23-29 in New Orleans.

 

 
Farley

Jonathan Farley, assistant professor of mathematics, presented a lecture on "Differential Posets and Distributive Lattices: A Last Conjecture of RichardStanley" during the Mini-symposium on Ordered Sets of the 10th Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics Conference on Discrete Mathematics, held June 10-16 in Minneapolis, Minn.

Kassie Freeman, assistant professor of education, presented with others "Researching the Future of Black Colleges" at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in New Orleans. Freeman was also among the presenters of "Incidents in the Lives of Harriet Jacob's Children in the Academy."

 

Michael Mihalik, professor of mathematics and chair of the department, presented a lecture on "Visual Decompositions of Coxeter Groups" during the International Conference on Geometric and Combinatorial Group Theory, held June 11-22 at the Techinon Research Institute in Haifa, Israel.
