Gee at a Glance
Surprises at Vanderbilt "Generally speaking, when you're University Chancellor, you hear a lot of complaints about food. I must say that's one that I do not hear. Vanderbilt has the finest university-based food service in the country. This is not a hyperbole, we really do."
Currently reading Jim the Boy, by Tony Early: "It's absolutely wonderful." Newspapers: "Four a day." Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: "Constance and I are both reading it."
Forms of escapism "I'm a great moviegoer, but I'm not a great television watcher. I go to movies very often. ... I recently read the Perfect Storm, so I went to see the movie the other day. I went to see Gladiator because I'm very interested in some of its historical notions. But Constance and I will often rent movies and our interests are fairly wide. She likes foreign films more than I do. I tend to like movies that are not necessarily fancy, but that have a nice edge to them."
Currently in the car CD player Lou Bega, Little Bit of Mambo: "'Mambo No. 5' is one of my favorite songs at the moment. I like the fact that it gets me disassociated with some of the things that I've been doing. ... I [also] love classical music."
Season tickets Commodore football, and men's and women's basketball: "Obviously, much of our life is centered around the University, and we also want to be part of the larger Nashville community. We will probably buy tickets to TPAC and the Nashville Symphony."
Tennessee Titans tickets "I'm not a great professional sports fan, although Eddie George is one of my former students from Ohio State. One of the things I try to do is keep my Sundays for myself and for my family, and try to attend church and tend a little bit to my personal and spiritual life."
Black-and-gold bow ties "I have about a half-dozen, and I want to get some more. Maybe the Alumni Association will design a special Vanderbilt bow tie, so we bow tie wearers will not feel put upon."
Exercise Treadmill, elliptical machine, Stairmaster, spin bike, jungle gym: "Pretty steady regimen; six days a week with Sundays off."
Computer preference Macintosh.
Most recent online purchase "CDs from Amazon.com."
Favorite Web site "www.vanderbilt.edu, of course."
