Vanderbilt's Television News Archive began operations Aug. 5, 1968. The office records daily news programs from the three major broadcast networks and CNN, and houses the world's most extensive archive of national television news. More than 30,000 individual network evening news programs and 9,000 hours of special news-related programming, such as Watergate, the Gulf War, and American hostages in Iran, are globally available, making recent history easily accessible to the masses. In the November 1991 issue of Texas Monthly Magazine, CBS Evening News anchorman Dan Rather said he lives with two burdens: ratings and the Vanderbilt Television News Archive.
