In the final issue of each month, the Register publishes grants in excess of $25,000 that were awarded the previous month. The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in June that the following grants had been awarded:

 

Bruce Appel, Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $238,709 by the Public Health Service for "Genetic Analysis of Midline Cell Fate Specification."

 

Theodore A. Bapty, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $476,582 by the Department of Defense for "Constraint Based Real-Time Program Composition."

 

Leonard Bickman, Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies, has been awarded $224,031 by the Public Health Service for "Children's Mental Health Services Research Training­Years 11-15."

 

Frank M. Bowman, Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $55,805 by the National Science Foundation for "CAREER: Theoretical and Modeling Study of Secondary Organic Aerosol Partitioning Behavior."

 

Kenneth C. Catania, Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded $137,761 by the Public Health Service for "Development and Organization of Somatosensory Cortex."

 

Paul Cobb, Department of Teaching and Learning in the Peabody College, has been awarded $203,672 by the Department of Education for "Designing Learning Environments and Assessment Practices." Kay J. McClain is co-principal investigator.

 

Jerry C. Collins, Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $57,253 by the Whitaker Foundation for "A Program of Industrial Internships for Biomedical Engineering Students at Vanderbilt University."

 

Donald Compton, Department of Special Education in the Peabody College, has been awarded $180,000 by the Department of Education for "Linking Decoding Instruction, Decodable Text, and Metacognitive Instruction to Effect Strong Reading Comprehension Outcomes for Children with Disabilities."

 

Laura Desimone, Department of Leadership and Organizations in the Peabody College, has been awarded $99,879 by the Department of Education for "National Assessment of Educational Programs Secondary Analysis Grant Program." Thomas Smith is co-principal investigator.

 

Judy Garber, Department of Psychology and Human Development in the Peabody College, has been awarded $253,767 by the Public Health Service for "Life-Span Development of Normal and Abnormal Behavior."

 

Sanjiv Gokhale, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $50,000 by the National Science Foundation for "International Trenchless Technology Colloquium."

Craig Anne R. Heflinger, Department of Human and Organizational Development in the Peabody College, has been awarded $151,000 by the Public Health Service for "Service Use by Youth with Alcohol and Mental Disorders."

 

Kathleen V. Hoover-Dempsey, Department of Psychology and Human Development in the Peabody College, has been awarded $56,930 by the Department of Health Services for "Statistical Analyses of Health-Related Data."

 

Gabor Karsai, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $395,463 by the Department of Defense for "Autonomous Negotiating Teams and Model-Integrated Computing for Autonomic Logistics."

 

David Kosson, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $143,708 by the Department of Energy for "Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation II."

 

Mark W. Lipsey, Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies, has been awarded $188,750 by the Public Health Service for "Effects of Intervention for Adult Children."

 

David E. McCauley, Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $286,000 by the Department of Agriculture for "The Population Genomics of an Invasive Species in Its Native and Introduced Ranges."

 

Marian Neamtu, Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $107,000 by the National Science Foundation for "Bivariate Splines for Geometric Modeling."

 

Thomas J. Palmeri, Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $75,521 by the Public Health Service for "Rules and Instances in Perceptual Categorization."

 

Ned A. Porter, Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $144,679 by the Public Health Service for "Chemistry-Biology Interface Training Grant."

 

Oakley Ray, Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $29,789 by the Public Health Service for "American College of Neuropsychopharmacology Annual Meeting Special Programs."

 

William Smith, of the Graduate School, has been awarded $37,000 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for "Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellowship for Kassatihun Gebre-Amlak." Kassatihun Gebre-Amlak is co-principal investigator.

 

Jeffery D. Schall, Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $377,604 by the Public Health Service for "Saccade Target Selection--Frontal Cortex."

 

Ronald D. Schrimpf, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded $523,000 by the Department of Defense for "Semiconductor Radiation Physics: From Defects to Devices."

 

James V. Staros, Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $183,637 by the Public Health Service for "Molecular Biophysics Training Program at Vanderbilt."

 

Alan R. Tackett, Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded $44,224 by the Department of Energy for "Sandia Laboratory: Support for Ryan Hatcher."

 

Joseph H. Wehby, Department of Special Education in the Peabody College, has been awarded $200,000 by the Department of Education for "Leadership Training Program in Emotional Disturbance: Focus on Academic Instruction."
