Student dies in auto accident
A sophomore enrolled in the College of Arts and Science died Jan. 5 of injuries received in an automobile accident. Lesa Nicole McFarlane, 21, had planned to spend the spring semester in Australia as part of Vanderbilt's study abroad program, according to her adviser, Kate Daniels, associate professor of English. News of McFarlane's death was disseminated to the student body through an e-mail message sent by the Division of Student Life. "We share in the sense of loss felt by Lesa's family and friends," said the message, which encouraged distraught students to seek counseling services offered by the University. "At times like this, it is best to reach out to others, and we hope that you will take comfort in one another." McFarlane, who commuted to campus from her Lebanon, Tenn., home to attend classes, is survived by her father, mother and step parents. Funeral services were held Jan. 9 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. Interment took place afterward at Evergreen Cemetery, also in Murfreesboro. At press time, plans were being made for a campus memorial service. -- Skip Anderson
