Head HR officer accepts position at Chicago Hospitals Darlene Lewis, associate vice chancellor for Human Resource Services, has accepted the position of senior vice president and chief human resource officer at the University of Chicago Hospitals, effective March 1. During her 5-year tenure at Vanderbilt, Lewis helped initiate several programs, including the Meharry-Vanderbilt alliance, the implementation of the University-wide staff satisfaction surveys, the evaluation and enhancement of the faculty and staff benefit programs, and the extension of University benefits to domestic life partners. A national search is under way for a new associate vice chancellor of Human Resource Services.
Staff Advisory Council to meet Jan. 8 The University Staff Advisory Council will meet Jan. 8 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in Room 189 of the Sarratt Student Center. Refreshments will be served before the meeting. The University Staff Advisory Council is composed of 75 elected individuals who represent more than 3,000 full- and part-time exempt and non-exempt non-Medical Center staff members. As established in its bylaws, the purposes of the USAC are to serve as an advisory group to administration and staff on various problems and policies that affect the University, and to maintain communication between University staff and administration. The council meets on the second Tuesday of each month and is open to all Vanderbilt staff.
Student Rec Center celebrates 12 years of service Jan. 9 To commemorate the Student Recreation Center's 12th anniversary, refreshments will be served Jan. 9 from 7 to 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 343-4159.
Sexual Harassment presentation held Jan. 14 Training and Development, a division of Employment Practices, is offering a "Sexual Harassment" brown-bag presentation Jan. 14. The event, part of the Individual Growth and Support Series, is designed to inform participants about the different categories of sexual harassment and the rights of the University community who experience sexual harassment. Dayani Center offers friendly special The Kim Dayani Center is holding a "bring a friend" special for the month of January. Any member at the center this month may invite a guest to participate in one class for free. Members are eligible to win a free one-month membership to the center or a full-body massage from one of the center's massage therapists. If your friend enrolls as a member by Jan. 31, you will receive a Dayani workout bag and your friend will receive a 50 percent discount on their enrollment fee. Green thumbs wanted for new greenhouse project A greenhouse that stood vacant for 30 years on Peabody's campus has been renovated and will soon be used to serve community food banks. The greenhouse needs several volunteers to perform routine plant maintenance such as watering, planting, transplanting and weeding. Workers with the greenhouse are currently experimenting with growing spinach and lettuce and plan to donate seedlings to the Second Harvest Food Bank, Nashville's Table and others this spring. More volunteers will be needed as spring nears, and a grand opening is tentatively being planned for late winter. Experience is not necessary. Kix Brooks ponies up Children's Hospital fund-raiser proceeds On Dec. 18, 2001, singer/songwriter Kix Brooks and his wife Barbara presented the proceeds from the Music City Futurity, a fund-raising cutting horse show developed by the Brooks that benefits the Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. More than $65,000 was split evenly between the two worthy causes. The fund-raiser was held Oct. 8-16 at the Williamson County Ag-Expo Park.
Orientation programs pick up awards at two conferences Vanderbilt's 2001-02 orientation programs won several awards at two recent conferences. The National Orientation Directors Association Conference in Toronto, Nov. 4-7, 2001, honored Vanderbilt with awards in three categories: Outstanding Use of Theme, Outstanding Welcome Week Publicity and Outstanding Orientation Handbook. Vanderbilt's Orientation Guide received the Southern Association of College Student Affairs' Publication Award for Handbooks at the annual conference in Orlando Nov. 11, 2001. Michelle Rosen, assistant vice chancellor for student life, accepted the awards on behalf of the University.
HEALTHPlus offers family swim, massage therapy HEALTHPlus offers a variety of special events for Vanderbilt employees. A family swim night will be held Jan. 11, during which one guest will be allowed per child for free swimming in the Memorial Gym pool. Staff ID is required and you must supply your own towels. Enter the pool from Lot 71 by the Charles Hawkins Baseball Field. HEALTHPlus also offers massage therapy services for a fee of $1 per minute on Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Massage therapists must be paid at the time of the appointment.
