Change in 'Register' publishing cycle

The next issue of the Vanderbilt Register will be published Monday, March 12, due to spring break.

 

Doyle named to Faculty Senate chair

Malcolm Getz, chair of the Faculty Senate, recently announced that Don H. Doyle, the Nelson Tyrone Jr. Professor of History, will serve as the chair of the Reappointment, Tenure and Grievance Process for the next two years. Faculty who contemplate grieving actions in this arena should consult page 100 of the Faculty Manual, then contact Doyle. At its Feb. 8 meeting, the Faculty Senate recognized Gary F. Jensen, professor of sociology, for his service as chair of the grievance process for 1999 and 2000.

 

Professor chosen for webcast concert

On Friday evening, March 2, music composed by Michael Kurek, associate professor of composition, will be performed for a live audience and also via streaming video webcast from the Harlem School of the Arts in New York. The webcast begins at 6 p.m. (CST) and is scheduled to be accessible through a link on the Vanderbilt homepage (www.vanderbilt. edu). An archived file of the webcast should also be available there after the concert. The concert will also include an interactive Web chat session among the composer, the audience, and students at Vanderbilt, Columbia University and the University of Southern California. Kurek will serve as guest composer at the Harlem School, teaching classes there for a day prior to the concert.

 

University Calendar launches Feb. 27

The newly created Office of University Calendar launches its Web-based system Feb. 27. Featuring a comprehensive calendar of events for University Central, the Medical Center, the student body and the Nashville community, the calendar is accessible through Web browsers such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer. Users have the option to view a single, comprehensive listing or multiple calendars. Detailed information about many of the events is available as well as links to homepages and related events. Rare books on sale at Eskind Library

Vanderbilt Medical Center Library's annual Collector's Book Sale will be held March 6­8 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Historical Collection Room, located on the third floor of the Eskind Biomedical Library. Books for sale are all duplicates and include rare and out-of-print books dealing with the history and philosophy of medicine and science. Included in the sale is a selection of 19th century medical classics. The sale will include several carts of bargain books and surgical and pediatric reprints, many of which are autographed. Credit Union hosts annual meeting

Join the Credit Union staff and board of directors at the annual Membership Meeting to learn about the past year and what the Credit Union has planned in 2001. The meeting will be held Wednesday, March 7, in Room 208 Light Hall from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded. There will be a grand prize of a color television. Other prizes will be awarded as well.

 

Nominations sought for McGill Awards

Each year, the University solicits nominations for awards presented through the generosity of the McGill family and in honor of Dr. John T. and Lizzie Allen McGill. Two awards will be awarded to "the academically accomplished freshman student of gentle bearing who has shown kindness and respect for all others and who has established qualities of leadership." The two freshmen recipients will each receive a prize of $300. Two awards will be given to upper-class students who are "academically accomplished, who have demonstrated qualities of leadership, and whose efforts have led to an increased understanding of other students' needs and a more civil campus atmosphere." The two recipients will each receive a prize of $400. Nominations should be mailed to the McGill Awards, Box 1677, Station B. The deadline for nominations for the 2001 McGill awards is Feb. 27.

 

Poetry contest open to all students

The Academy of American Poets announces its annual contest for a prize of $100 offered for the best poem or group of poems submitted to Vanderbilt's English Department. The contest is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at Vanderbilt. Each contestant may enter one to three poems. Two copies of each poem should be submitted, one with and one without the contestant's name and address. The deadline for submission is Friday, March 30. Submissions should be made at the Vanderbilt English Department, 331 Benson Hall. The winner will be announced by April 13. For more information, contact Mark Jarman at 322-2541.

 

AVBA discusses life after Vanderbilt

The Association of Vanderbilt Black Alumni will host a professional panel at the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. Black alumni will discuss their experiences while at Vanderbilt and their lives and careers since graduation. A reception will follow. The event is sponsored by the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center and the Association of Vanderbilt Black Alumni. The Black Cultural Center will also host "1st Friday @ the House" March 2 at noon.
