APPOINTMENTS

 

Robert H. Claxton, systems analyst information management at the Medical Center, has been appointed chairman of the awards committee of the Nashville Chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals for 2001.

 

 

COMMUNITY RECOGNITION

 

Cathy J. Griswold, secretary in the graduate department in religion, has been named in a new publication, Tennessee Volunteer Heroes 2001, produced collaboratively by the Tennessee Commission on National and Community Service and the Council of Community Services to pay tribute to some 500 Tennesseans who have distinguished themselves in their volunteer efforts. For several years, Griswold has devoted much of her free time and vacations to supporting the work of public schools and scouting organizations and has been the recipient of several other appreciative awards.

HONORARY DEGREE

 

C. Robert O'Dell, distinguished research professor of astrophysics, received an honorary doctor of science degree from Illinois State University Feb. 15. O'Dell, who was the lead scientist on the Hubble Space Telescope project, was a 1959 graduate of Illinois State University.

 

PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS

 

Many Peabody faculty presented at the 53rd annual conference of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) held March 1-4 in Dallas. Camilla P. Benbow, dean of Peabody College, presented at a forum on "The Education Industry: For Profits and Virtual Environments." Charles B. Myers, professor of social studies education, chaired and presented in a symposia titled "Implementing the NCATE 2000 Performance-Based Standards: Expectations about Beginning Teacher Subject Matter Knowledge and Competence." Myers also participated in a symposium on "Combining Standards, Performance Assessment and Web-Based Technology to Improve Teacher Education." Ann M. Neely, associate professor of the practice of education, presented "I'm Glad Discrimination Doesn't Happen Anymore: Challenging Prospective Teachers' Cultural Attitudes Through Discussion on Children's Literature." Her co-presenter was recent doctoral graduate Lynne Bercaw, now on the faculty at Appalachian State University in North Carolina.

Myers

William Bernet, professor of psychiatry, published The Fragile Alliance: An Orientation to Psychotherapy of the Adolescent, 5th edition. John E. Meeks is co-author.

 

Joseph H. Hamilton, Landon C. Garland Distinguished Professor of Physics and director of the Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research, recently presented several papers co-authored by A.V. Ramayya, professor of physics. He presented "A New Phenomenon: Shifted Identical Yrast Bands in Neighboring Even-Even Nuclei" at the Nuclear Structure 2000 Conference held in East Lansing, Mich. Aug. 15-19. At the International Conference on Nuclear Physics: Trends in Nuclear Physics held in Zakapone, Poland, Sept. 5-13, he presented "Octupole Correlations and Deformation in Ba, La and Pr." Hamilton gave a paper titled "Behavior of Nuclear Matter Under Extreme Conditions in Fission" at the Symposium on Fundamental Issues in Elementary Matter held in Bad Honnef, Germany, Sept. 25-29. And, at the Fundamentals & Applied Aspects of Modern Physics conference held in Namibia, South Africa Nov. 13-17, he presented "New Vistas of Fission and Neutron Rich Nuclei."

A. V. Ramayya, professor of physics, recently presented two papers co-authored with Joseph H. Hamilton, Landon C. Garland Distinguished Professor of Physics and director of the Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research. Ramayya presented "Binary and Ternary Fission Studies with Neutron Rich Nuclei Produced in 252Cf," at the International School of Nuclear Physics, 22nd Course: Radioactive Beams in Nuclear and Astro Physics held in Erice-Sicily Sept. 16-24, and "Binary and Ternary Fission Yields of Cf252" at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Nuclei Far From Stability and Astrophysics held in Predeal, Romania, Aug. 28-Sept. 8. .
