Attack of the Computer Viruses!

When it comes to keeping computer data safe from viruses, only the prepared survive. There are several steps users can take to prepare themselves for such an attack, and to minimize the damage. The experts at Information Technology Services strongly encourage all Vanderbilt computer users to take the following precautions:

* Always keep backup copies of all important files -- not only for recovery from virus attacks, but also in the event of hardware failure and data corruption.

* Install an anti-virus program on your system. Information Technology Services makes available anti-virus programs for both the Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms at no cost to the University community through its Web site at www.vanderbilt.edu/acis/ antivirus. Updates are available as often as weekly, thus it is important for users to update the software on their computer regularly.

* Do not open attachments to e-mail unless you know the sender and you are expecting an e-mail attachment from this person.

* If you believe you are experiencing damage or file loss due to a virus, get assistance immediately. Do not turn off the system, but physically disconnect it from the network. Next, contact your department's local support personnel, the University help desk at 343-1631 or the Medical Center help desk at 4-HELP (3-4357).
