Lithographs by Honoré Daumier, including the one above from Les Baigneurs, will be on display at the Fine Arts Gallery Sept. 2 through Oct. 17.

VU Exhibits

The exhibit “The Satirical Eye: Lithographs by Honoré Daumier, Paul Gavarni and their Contemporaries” will open Sept. 2 at the Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery with a reception at 5 p.m.

Drawn primarily from the Fine Arts Gallery’s collections of 19th-century French graphics, the exhibit will feature work by Honoré Daumier and his lesser-known contemporaries, including Paul Gavarni (Guillaume-Sulpice Chevalier), Charles Edouard de Beaumont and Cham. Each of these artists provided Parisians with a highly critical and sometimes humorous perspective on life, art, politics and culture.

Unique to this exhibit will be a Gavarni lithograph on loan from the Yale University Art Gallery, paired with its lithographic stone, exhibited courtesy of a private collector. The exhibit will be further augmented through a recent gift by Thomas B. Brumbaugh, professor of fine arts, emeritus, as well as by material lent by the W. T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire Studies at Vanderbilt. The exhibit is being presented in conjunction with the 25th annual conference of “Social Theory, Politics and the Arts,” to be held Oct. 7-10 in Nashville.

“The Satirical Eye” will be on view through Oct. 17. Gallery hours are noon through 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends. The Fine Arts Gallery is located on the first floor of the Fine Arts Building, at 23rd and West End avenues. All events are free and open to the public. For more information, please call 343-1704.
