The Rev. Gary P. White, who earned a master of divinity degree at the
Vanderbilt University Divinity School in 1995 with an emphasis in pastoral
theology and care, began his duties July 17 as the newly appointed associate
university chaplain.
"We are very fortunate to have Gary as a part of the University Chaplain's
office," said Gay Welch, university chaplain. "He brings a wealth of
experience in interfaith ministry, social service and commitment to
higher education. He will work in areas of interfaith programming, values
education, counseling and a wide variety of campus ministries."
White is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister. Prior to coming
to Vanderbilt, he had been serving as coordinator of the Interfaith
Volunteer Caregivers Project in St. Helens, Ore. Before that, he was
a coordinator of the Interfaith CARE Team program at Nashville CARES.
White, a West Tennessee native, double-majored in international relations
and Russian language at the University of Memphis.
A private pilot and avid martial artist, he succeeds Mona Bagasao,
who accepted a job as chaplain of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg,
Fla.
