Fall parking regulations announced Aug. 19 marks the end of summer modified parking rules and the return to regular parking enforcement. After 4 p.m. Aug. 19, all permits will be restricted to their specific identified parking lots between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. In Zone 1, 204 new zone parking spaces are available. Lot 82 has been reconfigured to increase aisle and parking space widths to facilitate usage, and to provide visitor parking. Lot 102, Capers Avenue Extension, has been paved and will provide 20 additional two-hour parking spaces.
VUMC sponsors blood drive Aug. 16 The Medical Center is sponsoring a blood drive on Aug. 16 in association with the American Red Cross. The blood drive will be located in Medical Center North Room S-2400, and will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donations are especially needed during the summer months. To wrap-up a summer-long challenge between area hospitals, all donors will be qualified for a drawing for free tickets to an upcoming Tennessee Titans game. Community Giving Campaign kicks off The Medical Center will kick off its portion of the Community Giving Campaign with a celebration Aug. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Light Hall. The non-medical areas of campus will launch their portion of the campaign Sept. 4 from noon to 1 p.m. in Branscomb Quadrangle. This year's chairperson for the campus-wide fund-raiser is Allan Guyet, Vanderbilt chief of police. The campaign solicits money from faculty and staff for a variety of charities in the area, including Community Shares, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and Community Health Charities of Tennessee. This year's campaign theme is "Neighbors Helping Neighbors." The entire University will be involved in working toward the campaign's goal of $800,000. Junior faculty to attend orientation Junior faculty members who are new to Vanderbilt this fall or appointed last spring will attend the "Teaching at Vanderbilt" orientation from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 20. The session is sponsored by the Provost's Office and the Center for Teaching, and includes presentations by Dean William G. Christie of the Owen Graduate School of Management, Associate Provost Virginia Scott and Allison Pingree, director of the Center for Teaching.
Pictorial book available for ordering For the first time in more than a decade, the University Bookstore is offering the pictorial book Vanderbilt University: A Photographic Journey. The hardcover book, available in November, will feature full-color pictures taken by award-winning University photographers. Each book costs $39.99 and can be ordered in advance on-line at www.vanderbilt.edu/pictorial_book. Books can also be ordered by calling the Bookstore at 322-2994.
Upcoming retiree counseling offered Retirement counseling for the University retirement plan will be held Aug. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 114 of Sarratt Student Center. A representative from Fidelity Investments will be available by appointment for one-on-one consultations to discuss retirement planning, asset allocation and transfer of assets. Fidelity Investments encourages those interested to bring a list of questions, the most recent statement from Fidelity Investments Tax-Exempt Services Company, and asks to allow sufficient time in one's schedule in case appointments run longer than the allotted time of 30 minutes. Tuition reminder service now available Faculty and staff who have a college dependent participating in the University's tuition benefit program can now subscribe to an e-mail reminder program. The program titled www.tuition-discount@vanderbilt.edu will send reminders of paperwork due dates for submitting forms for pre-fall/pre-spring each year. Former hoopster 'Lost' on NBC Former Commodores women's basketball star Donna Harris will appear on the new NBC show Lost. Harris makes her debut on Lost Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. The show features six players who are dropped off in an undisclosed foreign country with $100 each and limited supplies. The players are divided into three teams and must race to see who can make it to the Statute of Liberty first. Harris played at Vanderbilt from 198994, holding the University's record for 3-point percentage for a season and boasts ninth place on Vanderbilt's all-time scoring list with 1,400 career points.
