‘It’s really nice to hear your voice,’ inmate’s son says    by Thomas Goldsmith
Each volunteer walks into prison with a book, a cassette recorder and a blank tape. And each leaves carrying a mother’s love.
The two dozen volunteers who have driven out to the Tennessee Prison for Women Annex every other week this semester are part of Aiding Inmate Mothers, a program started by Vanderbilt Prison Project chair Jenny Chang. The program allows inmate mothers in the lower-security facility to connect with their children by reading books onto tape: both the tape and the book go to the children. (see story)
