Joe Hough, a dean for all seasons, to take his leave    by Lew Harris

Joe Hough
Joe Hough, the new dean on the block at Vanderbilt nine years ago, was making the rounds, introducing himself to fellow deans at the University. He scheduled an appointment with his counterpart at the Owen Graduate School of Management, Martin S. Geisel.
“At the appointed time, I walked into Marty’s office and sat down,” Hough recalled in his eulogy delivered at a memorial service for Geisel,
who died in February.“There was this big bear of a man and sitting behind his desk.He rose and shook my hand and then came the booming announcement: ‘I have to warn you that I am very wary of preachers of any sort.’” (see story)

Vigilant eyes oversee treatment of animals    by Sara Wraight
As the door opens to a room where Galago monkeys live, a petting-zoo-like smell wafts towards an unsuspecting visitor. It seems as if the cages have not been cleaned in days.
“Actually, this is the way they like it,” said Jeffrey D. Schall, associate professor of psychology and director of the animal facility in Wilson Hall. Galagos, small primates also known as bushbabies, establish their territory with their smells and exhibit signs of distress if their cages are cleaned too often, Schall explained to a reporter on a recent tour of the Wilson facility.
