More than 30 students, faculty and guests treaded barefoot across 12 feet of burning coals May 1, 2000. Inspired by a term paper from the honors seminar "The Copernican Revolution: 1543 to the Present" taught by David Weintraub, associate professor of physics and astronomy, the brave participants were educated by instructors from the Oregon-based group, Wings of Fire. No one was injured, and most participants echoed the sentiments of a fire-walking student who said, "I didn't feel anything on my feet. I really broke through my fears."
