Chancellor Gordon Gee addressed the faculty April
16, during the inaugural Spring Faculty Assembly. Previously,
the Faculty Assembly was an annual event which took place
at the beginning of the academic year. In addition to the
address, Gee recognized eight faculty members for their contributions
to the University (see pages 46).

Chancellor Gordon Gee addressed members of the
Vanderbilt faculty April 16, at the inaugural Spring Faculty Assembly.
Mark Jarman, professor of English, began the proceedings with a
reading of five original poems. Malcolm Getz, associate professor
of economics and president of the Faculty Senate, introduced the
Chancellor whose remarks follow:
Thank you very much, and thank you Malcolm, for that superb
introduction. Inspiration from a Chancellor is an oxymoron, I
think, and I therefore appreciate that. And I appreciate Malcolm
and his colleagues -- the executive committee of the Senate --
and the great work they have done making me feel welcome and wanted
and certainly being great advisers and supporters, and for that
I am very grateful. And thank you, Professor Jarman, for that
superb reading and I must beg the audience's forgiveness, in advance,
if my best efforts now seem a bit more pedestrian.

skills in employees throughout the University. More than 180 people
have completed the annual 11-month course since the LDF was initiated
in 1990
