Lamar Alexander wrote in an April 13, 1962 Vanderbilt Hustler editorial piece that, "Campus politics is about as exciting as a strip-teasing grandmother." As editor-in-chief of the newspaper, the future governor of Tennessee and presidential candidate lamented the lack of candidates for the highest student government positions and the complete apathy shown by the student body. He hoped to inspire his peers to get involved, "to abandon the shackles of no- coalition rules and allow campus politics to run its unsteady and exciting course."
