The School of Engineering has broken back into the top 50 in the U.S. News & World Report's listing of the nation's leading graduate schools of engineering with a ranking of 46. The school's last top 50 ranking was 48 in 1996.

"Only seven engineering schools in the southeast made the top 50," said Dean Kenneth F. Galloway. "We are very pleased to be one of them."

In other graduate and professional school rankings released last week by the magazine, the School of Medicine and Law School held steady at No. 16 and No. 17 spots, respectively. Also listed among the top schools in the nation are Peabody College, 7th among schools of education and Owen Graduate School of Management, 29th among schools of business. Last year Peabody ranked 5th and Owen ranked 26th.

In addition to professional schools, the magazine also issued new rankings for selected programs in the sciences. Vanderbilt's graduate program in biological sciences was listed as 29th.

The magazine also ranked specialties within the professional schools. Peabody received the following rankings: Administration, 4, up from 5th last year; Special Education, 2, same as last year; Education Policy, 10, down from No. 8; Elementary Education,7, down from No. 5; and Curriculum/Instruction, 9, same as last year.

In addition to the School of Medicine's No. 16 ranking for research, the school was ranked 43rd for primary care.

Each year the magazine ranks schools of business, education, engineering, law and medicine. Other disciplines are ranked periodically.

The rankings were e-mailed to universities late last week. More detailed rankings and information were to be available on the U.S. News Web site, usnews.com, beginning April 5 and in the April 15 edition of the magazine, which goes on sale April 8. The newsstand book, Best Graduate Schools, also goes on sale April 8.
