Staff Advisory Council meets April 9

The University Staff Advisory Council will meet April 9 at 8:30 a.m. in Sarratt Room 189. The USAC serves as an advisory group to administration and staff on various problems and policies that affect the University, and maintains communication between University staff and administration. All USAC meetings are open to Vanderbilt staff.

 

Faculty forum to address professional education

The Faculty Senate will present a faculty forum on "Professional Education: At the Cutting Edge" on April 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Alumni Room of the Law School. The panel will consist of William Christie, dean of the Owen School, Randall Thomas, and professor of law and James Hogge, associate dean of Peabody College. The chair of the Faculty Senate is James F. Blumstein, professor of law and Centennial Chair in Law.

 

Internal career fair will highlight jobs within University

Vanderbilt's Human Resource Services will hold an internal career fair, "Career Choices and Connections," April 10. Current employees of the University and Medical Center will have the opportunity to discuss options and opportunities available within Vanderbilt with Vanderbilt recruiters. Those interested are asked to bring their resumes with them to discuss potential opportunities with a recruiter. Classes on interviewing and resume writing skills will be available throughout the day. Informational handouts will be distributed to attendees. The fair will be held at the University Club from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 343-2383 to schedule an appointment with a recruiter and training workshop. Anti-hate panel to meet April 10

As part of a student initiative to counter racist graffiti that has appeared on campus this year, a panel will be held April 10 at the Sigma Chi fraternity house at 7:30 p.m. Representatives from other campuses where hate incidents have occurred will offer their perspectives. Panelists are Brandon Wolfe and Brandon Wilson of Auburn University, Peter Van Do of State University of New York at Binghamton and James Osborn of the University of Wyoming. At Auburn, fraternity members wore blackface and staged mock lynchings at a fraternity event. At SUNY-Binghamton, Asian American student John Lee was beaten by three white wrestlers in February 2000. University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepherd was beaten to death in October 1998. The event is sponsored by the "Hate: Not in MY Community!" organization.

 

Mark C. Taylor to give Vanderbilt Lecture on Great Teaching

Mark C. Taylor, Cluett Professor of Humanities and Religion at Williams College, will explore education's place in the emerging network culture in an April 11 lecture at Vanderbilt. Taylor's lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the Flynn Auditorium at Vanderbilt Law School. A reception with Taylor will precede the lecture at 5 p.m. in the Flynn Auditorium lobby. The event is free and open to the public. Taylor's appearance at Vanderbilt marks this year's Lecture on Great Teaching, presented by the Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching in coordination with the Chancellor's Lecture Series. Nashville and Vanderbilt to celebrate national 'Week of the Young Child'

"Vote for Children," Nashville's celebration of the national Week of the Young Child began April 7 and will run until April 13. The week's purpose is to focus attention on the importance of the early years for children's learning and all aspects of development. Several events are scheduled throughout Nashville and at Vanderbilt. Organized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and its local chapters, the national Week of the Young Child is a call for action to parents, early childhood educators and allied professionals, business leaders, community leaders and the public at large to make the critical early years the best that they can be for all children. Scheduling office to accept room reservations for fall

The Office of Schedules and Reservations will begin accepting requests for standing weekly meeting reservations for fall on April 15. Visit the office in Sarratt Room 208 or call 322-2448 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, to reserve a meeting room.

 

Science writing the topic of April 15 forum

A science and media forum will be held April 15 as part of an initiative by Research!America, an alliance of more than 440 institutions dedicated to making health, medical and scientific research a higher national priority. The forum will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Rotunda Room of the Wyatt Center and will feature a keynote address titled "Successfully Sharing Our Stories of Science" by Richard Klausner, former director of the National Cancer Center and special advisor to the National Academies. Following the address, a panel of four prominent journalists and four Vanderbilt scientists will describe the joys and the frustrations that they have experienced while attempting to tell interesting and compelling stories about scientific research to the public and discuss ways the communications process can be improved.
