AWARDS


Earline Kendall, professor of the practice of early childhood education, emerita, was honored with the Children's Hero award. The award was presented by Mayor Bill Purcell and Nashville Area Association for the Education of Young Children at the kickoff of Nashville's Week of the Young Child April 6.

ELECTIONS and APPOINTMENTS


James W. Guthrie, professor of public policy and education, director of the Peabody Center for Education Policy and chair of the department of leadership and organizations, was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Education Finance Association at the organization's annual meeting.

PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS


R. Wilburn Clouse, associate professor of education, presented the keynote address at the Rotary International Regional Futurist Planning Conference in Cookeville March 15. His Topic was "A Look into the Future: Thinking Like an Entrepreneur."

Mark Ellingham, associate professor of mathematics, presented an invited talk titled: "Spanning 2-trails from degree sum conditions" at a special session of the American Mathematical Society Southeastern Conference at Georgia Tech, Atlanta March 8-10.

Sam Hirt, director of campus recreation, is one of four directors of recreation presenting at the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association in San Antonio, Tx., April 9-13. The topic of Hirt's presentation is "Proven Cost-Saving Ideas for Facilities."

Carlos A. Jáuregui, assistant professor of Spanish, presented a paper titled "Las protestas del cuerpo sufriente: razón imperial, humanismo cristiano y los trastornos semánticos del tropo caníbal" at the Simposio internacional: Cultura literaria de la América colonial held at the UNAM in México City, March 6­8.

Edward B. Saff, professor of mathematics, presented an invited colloquium talk titled "Logarithmic Potentials with External Fields" at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kan., March 2-5.

Janos Sztipanovits, E. Bronson Ingram Distinguished Professor of Engineering, gave a presentation in January on "Embedded Software Development Research at U.S. Universities" for the Advisory Group on Electron Devices of the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense. The advisory group met to assess science and technology investment alternatives for the Director of Defense Research and Engineering.

Debi Tate, director of the Census Information Center in the State and Local Policy Center at VIPPS, and Cyndi Taylor, research associate at VIPPS, presented "Census 2000: Finding and Using Data for Your Community." The program was presented by the Government Documents Round Table of the Tennessee Library Association at their Spring Conference at the Nashville Convention Center, March 27.

Guoliang Yu, professor of mathematics, presented an invited colloquium talk titled "The Novikov Conjecture" at Virginia Tech, Blackbury, Va., Feb. 21-24.

PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES


John D. Bransford, Centennial Professor of Psychology, professor of education and co-director of the Learning Technology Center, was invited by Pedro Garcia, director of Metro Nashville public schools, to serve on the Director of School's Research Advisory Committee. The committee is charged with providing timely advice on Metro Nashville public schools' educational reform agenda.

Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt football coach, and Kevin Stallings, Vanderbilt men's basketball coach, will speak at the National Black Coaches Association convention April 25-27 at the Baptist Hospital Sports Medicine Center.

Harold G. Maier, David Daniels Allen Distinguished Professor of Law, served as moderator for a panel discussion on the "Extraterritorial Application of U.S. Antitrust Law" at a Symposium on International Litigation at the University of Texas Law School in Austin in February.

Ararat Osipian, fellow of U.S. Department of State from the graduate program in economic development, visited Offices of Sens. Fred Thompson and Bill Frist and Rep. Bob Clement to discuss issues of international students, student loans, research grants and student rights, as a part of a Lobby Day on Capitol Hill held by National Association of Graduate-Professional Students in February in Washington, D.C. Osipian serves as Southeast Regional Coordinator and Member of the Board of Directors of NAGPS. He is also organizer and presenter for the NAGPS 2002 Southeast Regional Conference in Savannah, Ga., to be held in April
