Sorority and fraternity members recognized
with Heard Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Outstanding members of Vanderbilt's sororities and fraternities as well as individual Greek chapters were recognized during presentation of the annual Alexander Heard Awards.

The Heard Awards program for excellence and outstanding achievement was established in 1982 by the Panhellenic and Interfraternity councils in honor of Chancellor Emeritus Alexander Heard and to encourage and recognize outstanding achievement in the Greek system.

Individual Greek members and chapters are evaluated through an application process that includes consideration of academic achievement, campus leadership and involvement, community service and athletic participation. The goal of the program is to recognize well-rounded individuals and chapters who have contributed significantly to the quality and development of the Greek system during the previous academic year.

Honored as the 1995-96 Outstanding Greek Affiliates Sept. 3 at the campus home of Dean of Residential and Judicial Affairs K.C. Potter were Beta Theta Pi member Chris Economos, a senior from North Barrington, Ill., and an economics and English major in the College of Arts and Science; Kappa Kappa Gamma member Elizabeth C. Tolva, a senior from Oak Brook, Ill., and a human and organizational development major in Vanderbilt's Peabody College; Sigma Chi member Sharat Kusuma, a junior from Albany, Ga., and an economics and chemistry major in the College of Arts and Science; Pi Beta Phi member Melanie Dayani, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., and a political science and European studies major in the College of Arts and Science; Sigma Nu member Dayton Miller of Manchester, Md., and an economics major in the College of Arts and Science; and Gamma Phi Beta member Maggie Bishop of Plano, Texas, and a biomedical engineering major in Vanderbilt's School of Engineering.
