Vanderbilt Women's Center features 'Purse Pursuits' paintings
by local artist Oct. 15-Dec. 6
NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- An exhibit of paintings focusing on the woman's
purse by
Nashville artist Sharon Charney will be featured at the Margaret Cuninggim
Women's Center at Vanderbilt University Oct. 15-Dec. 6.
A reception for the artist will be held at the center Thursday, Oct. 17,
from 5 to 6 p.m.
"In taking on the purse as an object of exploration I have discovered
questions and thought about answers and implications that I had never before
taken time to consider," says Charney. "Is a purse a female metaphor
by virtue of its form and function? Is a purse an object of security, a
substitute for the blanket of babyhood? Do its contents serve to nurture
through the day? What does it contain that is so personal that few dare
enter? Is a purse also symbolic of the mental and emotional baggage we carry?"
Locally, Charney's work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Greater
Vision Gallery, University Club of Nashville and the Nashville Artist Guild
Gallery at Cheekwood Fine Arts Center. Her work has also been featured in
numerous group exhibitions at galleries including the Centennial Arts Center,
Vaanguard Gallery and Cumberland Gallery.
In addition, the artist's work is part of the corporate collections of several
local businesses including Northern Telecom Inc. and The Bohan Agency.
The Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center is located in the Franklin Building,
316 West Side Row. For more information, call
