Jackson to address presidential election
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson, political activist
and preÝf the National Rainbow Coalition, will share his thoughts
on the upcoming presidential election at 8 p.m. Oct. 23 at Memorial Gym.
Vanderbilt faculty, staff and students may receive two free tickets for
the event with a Vanderbilt I.D. Tickets for the public are $5 and may be
purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets beginning Oct. 16.
Most noted for his 30 years of political activism in the fight for civil
rights, empowerment, peace, gender equality, economic and social justice,
Jackson has maintained his vision of uniting people of all races, classes,
genders and beliefs.
He is a supporter of several political issues including national health
care, peace in the Middle East and the fight against drugs. Acting as an
international diplomat, Jackson assisted in the release of 48 Cuban and
Cuban-American prisoners in 1987 and the freeing of hostages from Kuwait
and Iraq in 1990. In his advocacy for youth, he has traveled to high schools,
colleges and universities encouraging students to stay in school and away
from drugs.
Jackson ran on the Democratic ticket in the 1984 and 1988 U.S. presidential
elections. In 1990, he was elected "Statehood Senator," a position
created to advocate for statehood for Washington D.C. The District of Columbia
has no voting representation in Congress.
Jackson's talk is sponsored by the Vanderbilt Speakers Committee which is
chaired by Vanderbilt senior Caroline Davis.
