Vanderbilt appoints new associate vice chancellor
for human resources

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Darlene Lewis will join Vanderbilt University August 1 as associate vice chancellor for human resources. She currently holds that position at the University of Pittsburgh.

"Darlene is someone who has refreshing common sense when it comes to leadership," said Vice Chancellor for Administration William A. Jenkins, in announcing Lewis' appointment July 1. "Her experience in the health care arena, as well as in higher education, will serve her well at Vanderbilt.
We are pleased that she is joining our Vanderbilt community and will lead an area that affects the lives of all faculty and staff."

Lewis will oversee the daily operations of all human resource offices, as well as Vanderbilt s Occupational Health and Wellness Center. The position was formerly held by Clint Davidson, who resigned in October 1995 to join the staff at University of Pennsylvania.

"The committee identified several excellent candidates for the position. However, Darlene's experience and credentials placed her at the top of our list," said Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs Dr. Joseph C. Ross, who served as search committee chairman. "Darlene Lewis is the right person to assume the leadership role in human resources at Vanderbilt. We are very pleased that she has accepted."

Lewis, who received her bachelor's degree from San Diego State University and her master's degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, said she is looking forward to her new responsibilities at Vanderbilt.

"Although the title at Vanderbilt is similar to the one I currently hold at Pitt, the position includes responsibilities for the Vanderbilt Medical Center in addition to those for the campus," she said. "I look forward to the challenges this new position represents."

Prior to working at the University of Pittsburgh, Lewis served as vice president of human resources at Magee-Women s Hospital in Pittsburgh. She also served as deputy commissioner of administration and finance for the Department of Employment and Training, Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
