West Virginia State College president
to head Peabody Alumni Association

NASHVILLE, Tenn.
-- Hazo W. Carter Jr., president of West Virginia State College, has been elected president of the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University Alumni Association.

Carter said that he is deeply honored to be serving as president of the Peabody Alumni Board of Directors.

"The quality of the education that I received is a significant reason that I have been a president of two colleges for most of my career," he said. "Working with James W. Pellegrino, dean of Peabody College, other members of the board and alumni to help Peabody maintain its position as one of America's premiere education programs is something with which I look forward to with enthusiasm."

Carter earned his Ed.D. from what was then called George Peabody College for Teachers in 1975. While there, he conducted career guidance seminars throughout Tennessee and was named a director of the Career Guidance Institute, National Alliance of Business. He also served as vice president of Peabody's Graduate Council.

He was born in Nashville, Tenn., and received his bachelor's degree from Tennessee State University in 1968. He served as president of his freshman class.

Carter received a master's degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign in 1969. He worked as a public information officer for the Tennessee Department of Mental Health prior to enrolling in the doctoral program in higher education administration at Peabody.

He held positions at Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Va., and was president of Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark., before assuming the presidency of West Virginia State College in Institute, W. Va., in 1987.

Carter is chairman of the Presidents Council for the state college system of West Virginia. He is also vice president for education for the Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Peabody's living alumni include more than 10,000 practicing teachers, 175 school superintendents and 30 college or university presidents.

The college of education and human development has been nationally recognized for leadership and innovation in education technology, teaching and learning. Peabody has received the top designation for eight consecutive years in the Ruggs' survey of high school guidance counselors.
