NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Attorneys, physicians, health care administrators and others wanting to stay informed about government regulation of health care are invited to attend an American Bar Association-sponsored program Jan. 30 at the Opryland Hotel. "Regulation of Health Care: Latest Developments" is the title of the program, which is presented by the ABA's Section of Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice.
The program is designed for attorneys, but others will find it informative too, according to L. Harold Levinson, professor of law at Vanderbilt University and co-chair of the program.
"The presentations are targeted at the regulated - those who must deal with government agencies that regulate health care - as well as the regulators - those who work for the government agencies," Levinson said. "This is especially relevant to Nashville since we are the center of so much of what is happening in the business of health care." He noted that the discussion will be national in scope, with many speakers coming from other states.
The following panel discussions will be offered:
* 9-10 a.m. - Three Perspectives on Health Care Regulation;
* 10:15-11:45 a.m. - Fraud and Abuse Update: Development of the "Shared Risk" Rule;
* 1:45-3:15 p.m. - Adjudicating Public Funding Disputes in the Age of Managed Care: A Mock Hearing;
* 3:30-4:30 p.m. - ADR in Health Care Law: Enforcement Disputes;
* 4:30-5 p.m. - Impact of Regulation on Medical Research.
Vanderbilt professors speaking during the program include: Levinson; James F. Blumstein, professor of law and director of the Center for Health Policy at the Institute for Public Policy Studies; and Ellen Wright Clayton, associate professor of law, associate professor of pediatrics and a Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Studies .
The program is being held in conjunction with the ABA midyear meeting Jan. 30-Feb. 1 at the Opryland Hotel. Tickets can be purchased at the door, starting at 8 a.m. Jan. 30, or in advance. For more information. call Levinson at (615) 322-2540 or the ABA at (202) 662-1528.
