Mental illness expert to speak at Vanderbilt University's Peabody College

NASHVILLE -- Michael J. Goldstein, University of California at Los Angeles professor of psychology and psychiatry, will present "Family Research and Intervention with Psychotic Patients" Thursday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. in 241 MRL Building.

Goldstein is being brought to Vanderbilt University's Peabody College campus as part of the John F. Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development Lectures on Human Development and Mental Retardation. His visit is co-sponsored by Vanderbilt University's Department of Special Education, Department of Psychology and Human Development, Department of Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology Training Program.

Goldstein has published more than 200 journal articles on a range of topics including family therapy, family interactions, expressed emotion, etiology and treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder.

In 1985, he received the Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Award; in 1987, the Cumulative Contribution to Research in Family Therapy Award; and in 1988, the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award.

The current president of the Society for Research on Psychopathology, Goldstein also has received numerous research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health to study families and schizophrenia, and he has served on NIMH grant review panels.
