Agenda

In the year 2000 and in these first few days of 2001, we have witnessed African American issues once again bubble to the surface of America's melting pot.

Citizens file voter disenfranchisement lawsuits in Florida. George W. Bush nominates a diverse and controversial cabinet. Motorists and the ACLU file charges of racial profiling in several states. Lawmakers and educators question whether school choice hurts the students who need help the most. More than 30 years after the Civil Rights movement, race still plays a significant role in the major news stories you cover.

This fellowship will explore complex social issues facing African Americans on a variety of fronts including the justice system, education, religion and in the media. The program is designed to engage journalists, Vanderbilt faculty and outside experts in discussions that will help expand your insight on covering the issues relevant to an emerging generation of African Americans for which the Civil Rights movement is a piece of history they have not experienced firsthand.

The fellowship is available to a limited number of reporters, editors and other journalists at newspapers or magazines; broadcast media; and freelancers with substantial experience in the field. As host, Vanderbilt will cover the costs of your room and will provide some meals for the duration of the fellowship. Your media organization is responsible for your travel expenses and salary during the fellowship.
