What are OSHA Surveillance Evaluations?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specific screening requirements for employees working with potential occupational hazards. The Occupational Health Clinic provides medical surveillance for early detection of health changes which may result from occupational hazard exposure.
What hazards require surveillance evaluations at Vanderbilt University?
OHC conducts medical screening for workplace exposure to noise, animals, certain chemicals, tuberculosis, asbestos, lead, and other hazards. We also have respirator clearance and emergency medical service clearance programs for those who must wear respirators at work or transport emergency patients from remote sites.
What departments participate in these evaluations?
The following are some of the departments that participate in one or more of the surveillance evaluations: Plumbing Shop, SER Shop, HAR Shop, Carpenter Shop, Electric Shop, Paint Shop, LifeFlight, Steam Plant, Environmental Health and Safety, Pesticide Shop, and Printing Services. All medical center departments participate in tuberculosis screening and all animal care workers participate in animal care screens.
How often is evaluation required?
Most of the surveillance evaluations are conducted initially on hire and annually thereafter.
How will I know if I need an evaluation?
If you work with any of the preceding hazardous agents and you are not enrolled in a surveillance program, ask your supervisor if and when you should be screened, or call Environmental Health and Safety ((615) 322-2057) or the Occupational Health Clinic ((615) 936-0955). What happens after I am evaluated?
An OHC provider will discuss your screening results with you, including any need for further follow up. Your department will be notified that your screen was completed, but the results of your screen will remain confidential.
