Annual influenza immunization of health care workers has been demonstrated to provide several benefits such as decreasing absenteeism/presenteeism, medical costs and the spread of influenza in the community. Influenza immunization is open to all Vanderbilt University and Medical Center faculty/staff and VUMC volunteers as a benefit for which there is no charge to the employee.

When the influenza vaccine is available in the fall, multiple dates and sites are designated for you to get the immunization. Occupational Health nurses can be scheduled to do onsite vaccinations in your department. Occupational Health nurses visit hospital work stations during late evening and night shifts. Vaccinations are given in the Occupational Health Clinic and do not require an appointment.

Did you know?

During the 3 to 4 weeks of the Occupational Health Clinic’s flu vaccine campaign, we give approximately as many flu shots as the rest of the Medical Center gives to patients over the entire flu season.

Approximately half of the over 20,000 Vanderbilt employees get their annual flu vaccine through the Occupational Health Program each year.

For the annual flu vaccine campaign, Occupational Health more than doubles its nursing staff.

Planning starts in the spring each year.

Large areas must be reserved well in advance to accommodate the crowds and keep the Occupational Health Clinic open to see people with work injuries. Fun fact:  If half of Vanderbilt employees came into the clinic over 3 weeks there would be about 70 people in the OHC lobby and spilling into the hallway at all times! Can you imagine trying to get through that crowd if you were injured?

The Occupational Health Clinic has been providing flu vaccine at no charge to Vanderbilt faculty and staff for over 25 years.
