Undergraduate Program

The Department of Economics offers a major and minor for undergraduates and a major in economic history, jointly with the Department of History. About 200 students complete the economics major each year. The programs in economics require at least a semester of calculus as prerequisite to statistics, intermediate theory courses, and upper level electives. A third of the majors also complete majors or minors in other disciplines including mathematics, a foreign language, or another social science. More than half of the majors complete internships, many of them paid. About half study abroad at some time during their undergraduate years most frequently in the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. About two-thirds of the majors plan to complete MBA degrees; a quarter plan to complete law degrees. Three or four graduates enter PhD programs in economics each year; about the same number enroll in medical schools.
