Program Information
VU ELC Special Programs has a wide-range of experience in designing highly customized programs for groups and individuals with specific English language needs for academics and professionals. These programs may be designed to emphasize English proficiency and American culture as well as specific content expertise. Vanderbilt departments or government agencies may request that a customized English language program be arranged for a certain group of participants. Such programs are tailored to the specific requirements of the sponsor.
Law School
Summer 2008
The Vanderbilt University English Language Center, in association with the Vanderbilt University Law School, offers the English for Legal Purposes Institute. This institute is open to both VU and non-VU affiliated students and scholars. [see Summer 2008 Institute]
Fall 2008 through Spring 2009
English for Foreign Lawyers is a series of courses for students admitted into the Vanderbilt University Law School LL.M. Program. Courses are designed to assist international students in their careers by increasing proficiency and confidence in various types of written legal discourse. Among other activities, students will summarize articles, discuss current legal events, and practice the generally accepted conventions of written legal analysis and citation in the United States.
Owen Graduate School of Management (OGSM)
The ELC has been working with OGSM since 1994 in developing support programming for incoming international students. These programs are specifically designed to help international students, who have been accepted into an OGSM program, begin the fall semester with the language skills and cultural knowledge necessary to benefit more fully from Owen’s academic program. These summer programs combine advanced-level language instruction with orientation and cultural activities.
The specific objectives of the programs:
-help the student adapt more quickly to the Owen environment
-communicate effectively in groups and individual presentations
-comprehend rapid American speech in lectures and discussion
-read and write English efficiently and effectively

Nursing Program
The ELC and Vanderbilt University School of Nursing [VUSN] offer this interdisciplinary program to prepare foreign educated nurses to take the CGFNS and the NCLEX-RN exams and enter the U.S. healthcare system.
Workplace
English for the Vanderbilt University Workplace is a course designed to teach basic listening, speaking, reading and writing in English to non-native Speakers of English Vanderbilt employees. The focus is to enable students to use English in the workplace and at home. Participants in these courses will benefit through improved English language skills which will enhance their performance at work. The class meets twice a week during the fall and spring semesters.
