The Vanderbilt University English Language Center, in association with the Vanderbilt University Law School, offers the English for Legal Purposes Institute. This intensive program is designed to provide incoming LL.M. students with the language and academic skills needed to succeed in a demanding LL.M. program in the U.S. The Institute also provides training in written and spoken English for lawyers and scholars from outside the U.S.
Intensive Instruction
The English for Legal Purposes Institute will offer you twenty hours a week of in-class instruction and additional hours for individual assistance on research and writing under the guidance of a legal writing tutor.
The Fundamentals of an LL.M. Program
In the Institute, you will learn what to expect in an LL.M. program in the U.S. and give you the language tools you need to excel.
The Key Communication Skills You Need
You will receive intensive instruction in oral and written communication, including small-group discussions and practice in responding quickly and concisely in large-group discussions. Additional instruction topics include legal research and scholarly writing.
Real Life, Real Time in the U.S. Judicial System
You will visit courts and law offices in Tennessee to examine the U.S. legal system and discuss legal practice with real-world judges and law practitioners. Additionally, since law touches every aspect of life in the United States, we will visit local venues and hold follow-up discussions on related legal issues that arise from each visit.
The Portfolio You Want to Succeed
When you finish the program, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Vanderbilt University English Language Center. You will also have a portfolio of relevant work to reference during your academic and professional endeavors.
