PERCY PRIEST LAKE

13 Miles from Vanderbilt (East)

DESCRIPTION: Percy Priest Lake is one of the many lakes that surround Nashville and can be a place for swimming, windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing, rowing, and fishing. Percy Priest Lake is managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Association (TWRA) and the TVA. It was when the dam, seen from Interstate 40, blocked the Stones River. Many marinas surround the lake and will rent boats for day use. Out of the water, there is much to do around the lake. Hamilton Creek Park, a Metro Park, offers over ten miles of Mountain Bike trails, a BMX bike course, remote controlled boat area, and a picnic area complete with grills and restrooms. Hamilton Creek Marina is home to the Vanderbilt Rowing Club, the Nashville Rowing Club, Hamilton Creek Rowing Club, and the Percy Priest Yacht Club. The yacht club sponsors sailing races every Wednesday and weekend through the warm summer season.
DIRECTIONS: Take I-40 East from Nashville to Exit 219, Percy Priest Lake and Stewart's Ferry Pike. Turn right at the top of the off-ramp. A left at the light will take you across the dam and to several of the marinas and recreation spots on the other side of the lake. Keeping straight will take you down Bell Rd. past the Elm Hill Recreation Area to the Hamilton Creek Park and Marina, both on the left side of the road, and well marked. Turning left into Hamilton Creek Park then the first right in the park will take you to the BMX track and the Mountain Bike area. Keeping straight on Bell Rd. will take you to I-24, a great place for shopping, go-carts, and restaurants after a long day at the lake.
CAUTIONS: Be careful around the lake as you would around any body of water. Swimming should be done in designated areas only as powerboats traveling at 40mph will not see you. Though many people do it, do not attempt cliff diving at the Elm Hill Recreation Area as many people have been paralyzed after jumping into the water and crashing into the rocks below.
