Dance History Courses
You don't need dancin' feet to study dance history; in fact, no previous knowledge of ballet, tap, or even hula is necessary. You do need a sharp pair of eyes to study the films that are assigned on a weekly basis. These classes are designed to introduce you to the masterworks of dance literature and to place them in historical and social context. Most of your education has taught you how to learn by sitting very, very still and holding a textbook in front of your nose, but these courses are different--you train yourself to see, really see, what is happening right before your eyes.
Students in these courses take great pride in what they accomplish and particularly enjoy the seminar-like atmosphere. Professor Needham enjoys getting to know students on a first-name basis and delights in the give-and-take that can happen only in
a small class setting.
