T'ai Chi for Musicians (MUSO 165)
The ancient art of T'ai Chi is very beneficial in the prevention of performance injuries, many of which are caused by poor technique, tension, overuse, and energy blockages. T'ai Chi requires very precise and slow movement that causes musicians to be more conscious and analytical of their technique. T'ai Chi demands total relaxation over an extended period of time, which helps musicians to perform longer with less damaging tension. It also trains a spinal posture that is conducive to relaxation and the optimal flow of chi (energy) throughout the body. Many students with performance injuries continue the same destructive practice habits because they lack a method for approaching these problems outside the practice room. T'ai Chi can have a lasting impact on the way they practice and perform.
