Arts Management (MUSO 101)

Today, running an arts organization can be big business: non-profit may be the name of the game, but the balance sheet had better not come out in the red at the end of the fiscal year or the organization may fold. But other issues may be far more crucial to survival over the long run: What happens when artists tell off the censors, and government bureaucrats tell artists how to run the show? What happens when creative sparks fly and patrons get scorched by the heat? This course is a history of how museums, orchestras, opera or theatre or dance companies became established in the United States. Guest speakers, film, readings, and visits to local non-profit arts institutions will help to make relevant many contemporary issues in arts management.
