The Business of Music (MUSO 100)

Everyone enjoys music of one style or another. Millions of people buy CDs and cassettes on a regular basis and listen to their favorite radio stations for hours each week.

Have you ever wondered how the music gets to the stores and radio stations? What about videos and MTV? How do artists get signed by a major label? What are the music industry career options for both musicians and non-musical people? Is the music business really a business?

In MUSO 100, Jim Foglesong, a veteran of forty years in many phases of the music industry, takes you through the process from the creation of the product (and how everyone is compensated) to the ultimate dream of Number One on the charts. Many classes include lectures and question-and-answer sessions featuring leading industry spokespersons. This course is a broad overview of music in the world of commerce.

"Absolutely an incredible man. I feel extremely lucky to have been able to take a class from him. This is without doubt the best class or professor I have had in four years at Vanderbilt."
