Selected Topics in Music History (MUSL 294)

Okay, we're not going to tell you what the topic is until you look at your Schedule of Courses booklet--but you should still consider taking MUSL 294. After all, it meets the criteria for the three S's: small, sophisticated, seminar! And it can be repeated for credit.

The selected topics courses are a chance for students--and faculty--to explore a topic of particular interest in depth. Consider what you may recently have missed:

Beethoven and Schubert--did Beethoven and Schubert ever actually meet? Was Schubert gay? How did friends (or the lack thereof) influence their music-making?

Shakespeare and Music--study some of the literally hundreds of musical works inspired by the Bard. Encounter music from the opera house, the Broadway stage, the concert hall, and from a movie theatre near you.

Blackface Minstrelsy--the sources, history, music and meaning of blackface minstrelsy, a 19th century popular tradition in which common-class white Americans mimicked the features, actions, and culture (sometimes!) of African Americans.

Prerequisites: MUSL 242 or 243 or 244.

Credit?
Arts and Science--elective
Engineering--humanities
Peabody--humanities
