Introduction to Music Literature
(MUSL 140, Section 2--Melanie Lowe)

MUSL 140 is an introduction to the literature of and about art music (i.e., classical music) of the western world, designed for the non-music specialist. After learning how to express in words what we already hear in music, students will explore over 1000 years of music history, primarily by listening to the music itself. At the same time, however, we'll take a multifaceted approach to our subject--one that considers music and the people who wrote it in relation to cultural, social, and political developments of the age. We'll discuss everything from the monastic lifestyle in the Middle Ages to love in the sixteenth century; from hallucinogenic experiences to Freud's psychoanalytic theories; from National Socialism in Germany to what's "uptown" and what's "downtown" in New York City. No musical experience is required.

"Dr. Lowe is an outstanding instructor. She is very animated and presents the material in an interesting way."
