Bach, Brahms, and Bartók MUSC 119

BABABRARCHTOHMSK! It's a joyful jumble of three composers whose works are the focus of MUSC 119. Usually, you hear about the "three B's" being Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Well, nothing against Beethoven (see MUSC 107!), but this course will focus on one composer per century, and figure out the things that bind different musical styles together--even when those styles sound so completely different from one another.

To be honest, most students have a rough time convincing themselves that all that weird, modern Bartók stuff has anything to do with the beauties of Bach and Brahms. Struggling with this issue is one of the many adventures of the course. Above all, MUSC 119--Bach, Brahms, and Bartók gives you the chance to kick your shoes off, spend time with individual pieces of music, really dig deeply into each one, build a relationship with it, talk about it, write about it. Some students never extend the thread of their musical tastes as far as Bartók; others dig Bartók totally and think Bach is dullsville. These conflicts are what make the world--and this class--go 'round! BABABRARCHTOHMSK!
