The Studio
The Trombone Studio has been designed from the ground up to be a state of the art teaching/learning environment. Technical
innovations utilizing a variety of audio, video and electronic support
are available for students. These innovations have been implemented
so that they enhance interaction with the student. Unlike some studios,
where the presence of technology is intrusive (or wholly absent), the
technology and support in this environment is largely transparent to
the student. It is utilized when it will help the student grasp a concept,
become more aware of sonic details, and enhance the speed of learning.
Students who are studying the trombone at Vanderbilt have the advantage
of learning in the most advanced teaching and learning environment
that exists anywhere.
The Philosophy
There is a central philosophy of this studio. It
is called "The
Doctrine of Intent". Everything related to teaching
and learning is anchored by this philosophy and it allows us to
focus our efforts on what is important in the performance of music. Bordenisms.
The Program of Study
It's all here: technique, range, endurance, literature, excerpts, and more...but it starts with sound. If we don't have a great sound then we have no means by which to transmit the musical ideas. All students should consult the following links and come to their first class with the required materials.
