Project 1 (MUSC216)
due date: October 5
Create a stereo sound file composed of no more than 3 different
short sound sources. Use Sound Designer II. You may also use a
signal processing package such as SoundHack or Lemur/LemurEdit.
A sample rate of 22050 per second is adequate.
The file should be longer that 1 minute and no longer that
2 minutes. Copy an alias of the sound file into the
Evans folder on Mercury.
Also hand in (in hardcopy)
- a score (graphical or notated) that outlines the composition of the file.
I should be able to relate the score to the sound file. (see Notations
by John Cage, on reserve in the Blair Library).
- a brief report describing the form and content of the file.
- What is this work about?
- How is it structured? How is the structure manifested?
- What interesting techniques are being used?
- Put this work into a context?
- DO NOT give me a detailed description of how you put the file together.
Considerations:
- incorporate some signal processing techniques ie, EQ, pitch shifting, etc...
- explore at least three standard "classical tape techniques"
- give the file a coherent formal structure
- you may layer several tracks to a final stereo mix
- experiment with your selected sounds
- have fun
Reminders:
- Each part (sound file, score, write-up) will be one-third of your grade
- To put the work into a context, outside research (ie using the library
resources, books and CDs and records) is expected. This
should be reflected in the report.
