MATERIALS
- Staff paper and No. 1 or No. 2 pencils.
REVIEW
- Scales: all major and minor [3 forms], all modes.
- Intervals: all major and minor, P4, P5, P8 & TT [up and down], M9, m9, M10, m10 ascending
- Chords: major, minor, diminished, major-minor 7th, [with inversions], augmented. Common progressions utilizing all diatonic chords with inversions.
- Melodic Dictation: diatonic melodies with fairly easy rhythms.
- Rhythm: simple and compound meters, syncopation, duple and triple conducting patterns.
CONTENT
- Scales: locrian, whole tone, chromatic, octatonic.
- Melodies: Chromatic alterations [indicating modulation, secondary dominant harmonies, melodic embellishments], increasing diversity of rhythms, intervals, phrase structures, and styles. Also singing melodic line while playing chordal accompaniment.
- Intervals: M9, m9, M10, m10 descending
- Chords: mm7, MM7, half and fully dim 7 [RP and inversions]. Progressions to include mediant, sub-mediant, secondary dominants [with inversions], N6, augmented 6th chords and modulations.
- Melodic Dictation: increased accidentals and more complex rhythms.
- Rhythm: performing compound changing meter examples with conducting patterns. Performing simple and compound meters with more complex subdivisions and and metrical modulations.
- Melodies with 2-hand keyboard accoompaniments:Open score Bach chorales in 4 clefs, singing independent vocal lines while playing the rest of the score.
Grades will be determined by hearings and daily grades [20%], C.A.T. composite grade (computer lab) [40%], and a final exam [40%] consisting of sightsinging, written melodic and harmonic dictation.
Plan to spend four hours weekly in preparation for class assignments, one of which should be devoted to the Ear-Training Lab. Your progress will be monitored and evaluated by computers which will keep records of assignments completed. No partial credit will be given for the composite grade. Failure to reach assigned levels will result in failure of the course. Deadline for completion of the C.A.T. component is No extensions will be granted.
EAR TRAINING PROFICIENCY EXAM
The final exam for this course is a profieciency barrier which means that a satisfactory level of profieciency must be reached in each of the following areas in order to receive credit for the course:
- Sightsinging: Melodies, Rhythm, Intervals, Singing with keyboard accompaniment.
- Dictation: Rhythmic, Melodic, and Harmonic.
Students who do not meet the proficiency level(s) in one or more areas will receive a grade of "I" until those requirements are satisfied. Proficiency exams will be given at the beginning and end of each semester.
This class functions as a laboratory class. Attendance is mandatory, and no make-up quizzes will be given. After one absence, each unexcused absence will result in lowering the final grade by one point. Absences will be considered excused with written documentation by a physician or the associate dean.
Each student is expected to uphold the Honor Code : homework assignments, computer work, taking examinations, and substantiating absences.
