Mr. Joe Galloway
Speaks for Vanderbilt University's Army ROTC

The Vanderbilt Hustler Student Newspaper Article on Mr. Joe Galloway
On Saturday, August 28, 2004, Mr. Joe Galloway came to speak during the Army ROTC's freshman orientation weekend. Mr. Galloway was the only journalist to brave the conditions of the Battle of Ia Drang Valley in order to capture the heroic and horrific endeavors of the men on the battlefield. Using his knowledge, Mr. Galloway coauthored We were Soldiers Once...and Young with Lt. Gen. Harold D. Moore (Ret.), who was then the commander of 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry. In 2002, the book was made into a major motion picture.
After cadets and guests viewed the movie, Mr. Galloway and a panel of Vietnam veterans from the actual battle spoke about their experiences in the Ia Drang Valley and how accurately the movie portrayed them. They concluded the afternoon with a question and answer session where the cadets and guests had the
opportunity to ask specific questions.
