    Jesus Research

Abesamis, Carlos, S.J. A Third Look at Jesus.
From Claretian Press: "A must-read for Christians facing the challenges of the third millennium. The book is one of the ripened fruits of Fr. Abesamis' life and study as a Bible scholar, a friend of the poor, and a committed advocate for justice and wholeness. Lay-friendly, it is one book that is within reach of anyone who wishes to re-discover the total Jesus. At once personal and scholarly, the book speaks to the heart, the mind and the spirit, and a reflective reading of it will certainly disturb the roots of Christian indifference and mediocrity. A Third Look at Jesus is a key to bringing Jesus closer to the lives of the ever-growing millions of poor people in Asia."

Allen, Charlotte. The Human Christ: The Search for the Historical Jesus.
    New York: Free Press, 1998.
Historians have argued for generations over the true biography of Jesus. Now "The Human Christ" attempts to show that all their approaches were fundamentally biased, and presents--from a Christian perspective--a dramatic rediscovery of the humanity and power of Christ's life and teachings.

________. The Historical Jesus: The Life of a Mediterranean Jewish Peasant.  San Francisco: HarperSanfrancisco, 1991.
Crossan's book is a rigorous exploration of the anthropological, historical, and literary issues surrounding what we can know about Jesus of Nazareth. This work is by no means an unfavorable portrait of the Galilean. In fact, reading this book may make one realize what it was about this peasant and his "ragtag followers" that has made a 2,000-year impact on Western Civilization.

________ and the Jesus Seminar.  The Acts of Jesus: The Search for the Authentic Deeds of Jesus. San Francisco: HarperSanfrancisco, 1998.
The Jesus Seminar attempts in this book to listen closely to the Greek styles of the Original texts, then to render each distinctive voice in modern English. Consequently, Luke sounds like a good college English professor, but Mark sounds rougher, likestreet language. The text is color-coded--words in red indicate events that the translators believe to have actually taken place, for instance--and the volume also includes exhaustive commentary and indices by the members of the Jesus Seminar. Only the heartiest of readers will make use of all this auxiliary information. For most of us, the freshness of the language ("You scholars and Pharisees, you impostors! Damn you! You slam the door of Heaven's domain in people's faces.") is the most valuable discovery in the book.

Herzog, William II. Jesus, Justice, and The Reign of God : A Ministry of Liberation. Louisville, Ky. : Westminster John Knox Press, 2000.

Johnson, Luke Timothy. The Real Jesus: The Misguided Quest for the Historical Jesus and The Truth of the Traditional Gospels.  San Francisco: HarperSanfrancisco, 1996.
In the first book to challenge the findings of the Jesus Seminar, the controversial group of scholars who claim Jesus only said 18 percent of what the Gospels attribute to him, Johnson shows that the "real Jesus" is the one experienced in the present through faith rather than the one found in speculative historical reconstructions. Meier, John P. A Marginal Jew: Rethinking the Historical Jesus.  2 Volumes. New York: Doubleday, 1991.
Unlike other hyped up works on the "historical Jesus", Meier's series makes no sensationalistic theses. Instead, it soberly weighs the available evidence and reaches measured, tentative conclusions after a detailed review of the background of biblical scholarship. Although this is not a best-seller formula, it does make for what is perhaps the best introduction available to historical Jesus scholarship. Perhaps its one weak point is that so much material is considered of interest to  specialists and relegated to notes, that the reader finds himself going through each chapter twice: once in the body of the text, and once in the endnotes.

Witherington, Ben, III. Jesus the Sage: The Pilgrimage of Wisdom.  Minneapolis : Fortress Press, 1994.
Entering into the renewed and sometimes confusing attempts to comprehend the work of Jesus of Nazareth and his person, this volume guides the reader through a vast complex of ancient documents and contemporary questions. It shows that Jesus' contemporaries viewed Jesus as a Jewish prophetic sage whose teaching and style were a reflection of the convergence of Hebrew wisdom and prophetic forms and ideas.

Wright, N.T. The Original Jesus: The Life and Vision of a Revolutionary.  Grand Rapids, Mich: Eerdmans, 1996.
Wright is masterful in relating, simply but not simplistically, how Jesus, as a Jew, related his mission to the great themes of the Jewish Scriptures. Many questions that linger in the recesses of people's spiritual closets are clearly answered without being technical or weighty. This is a very good book to share to anyone, especially those in a Judaic or Arabic background or faith tradition, who is asking about the Messiah from Nazareth
